21. Controlling DNA compaction and the interaction with model biomembranes
Sammanfattning : The studies described in this thesis forms part of a larger collaborative project, Neonuclei, with the objective to design a module for packaging the negatively charged DNA into a ”neonucleus” with transcription competence. There are many applications that require control of DNA compaction, i.e. packaging or condensation. LÄS MER
22. Responding Model Membranes. Lipid Phase Behaviour, Domain Formation and Permeability
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns the interplay between the lipid phase behaviour, domain formation and the permeability of bilayer membranes. An essential part of this work has been the understanding of the phase transitions and equilibrium properties of lipid bilayers. LÄS MER
23. Xanthophyll Cycle in the Light of Thylakoid Membrane Lipids - Membrane Packing, Curvature Elastic Stress and Enzyme Binding
Sammanfattning : The xanthophyll cycle involves the light-dependent and reversible conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. The enzyme, violaxanthin de-epoxidase (VDE) catalyses the conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, via the intermediate antheraxanthin. VDE is a membrane-hosted enzyme during its activity. LÄS MER
24. Biogas generation in landfills : equilibria, rates & yields
Sammanfattning : Landfilling in "cells" has become more common in recent years. Different waste streams are guided to different cells, among which the biocell is a landfill designed for biogas production. In this thesis, the dependence of biogas generation on waste composition was investigated. LÄS MER
25. The plant respiratory chain: Redox responses and catalytic definition of alternative pathways
Sammanfattning : The respiratory chain of plants contains both proton-pumping enzymes that conserve energy and non-proton-pumping alternative enzymes that bypass the sites of energy conservation. In addition to the proton-pumping complex I, plant mitochondria contain alternative type II NAD(P)H dehydrogenases, which allow oxidation of NADH and NADPH from the matrix and the cytosol. LÄS MER
