  1. 1. Role of alveolar epithelial cells in macrophage responses against mycobacterial infections

    Författare :Olga Daniela Chuquimia Flores; Carmen Fernández; Diana Boraschi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lung; alveolar epithelial cells; macrophages; AEC-derived media; control of intracellular bacterial growth; mycobacterial infections; immunologi; Immunology;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis aimed to investigate the role of alveolar epithelial cells (AEC) on immune responses against mycobacterial infections, specifically, the role of AEC in modulating macrophage functions through the secretion of broad variety of factors.In paper I, we compared murine AEC with interstitial macrophages (PuM) in their ability to take up and control mycobacterial growth and their capacity as antigen-presenting cells. 2. 2. Modulatory role of IL-17 in airway inflammation

    Författare :Elin Silverpil; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Respiratory medicine; Lung; IL-17; IL-23; Macrophages; Neutrophils; T cells; Apoptosis; Phagocytosis; Airways;

    Sammanfattning : IL-17 orchestrates the accumulation of neutrophils to sites of infection and the release of microbicidal substances, and therefore plays a critical role in the innate immune response to infection. IL-17 is also involved in certain chronic inflammatory diseases in which dysfunctional control of neutrophil accumulation and turnover constitutes an important pathogenic factor. LÄS MER

    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mycobacterium tuberculosis; tuberculosis; macrophage; innate immunity; host-pathogen interaction; antibiotic tolerance; phagosomal maturation; bacterial phenotype; dormancy; persistence; virulence factor; ESAT-6; ESX-1;

    Sammanfattning : Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the pathogen causing tuberculosis (TB), a disease most often affecting the lung. 1.5 million people die annually due to TB, mainly in low-income countries. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Ozone and diesel exhaust : airway signaling, inflammation and pollutant interactions

    Författare :Jenny Bosson; Anders Blomberg; Thomas Sandström; Ellinor Ädelroth; John Balmes; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; ozone; diesel exhaust; airway inflammation; asthma; immunohistochemistry; Lung diseases; Lungsjukdomar; lungmedicin; Lung Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : It is well established that air pollution has detrimental effects on both human health as well as the environment. Exposure to ozone and particulate matter pollution, is associated with an increase in cardiopulmonary mortality and morbidity. Asthmatics, elderly and children have been indicated as especially sensitive groups. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Origin and ontogeny of human lung macrophages

    Författare :Elza Evren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The lung is a vital organ occupied by a large diversity of immune cells due to its close proximity with the external environment. This thesis focuses on a particular type of immune cell: the macrophage. LÄS MER
