1. Global Climatology and Regional Modeling of Coastal Low-Level Jets
Sammanfattning : Localized coast-parallel wind-speed maxima at low altitude, known as coastal low-level jets (CLLJs) have important ramifications to the coastal climate and a number of human activities. This thesis documents the existence of the CLLJs around the globe including their mesoscale structure, dynamics and spatio-temporal variability. LÄS MER
2. Mesoscale dynamics and boundary-layer structure in topographically forced low-level jets
Sammanfattning : Two types of mesoscale wind-speed jet and their effects on boundary-layer structure were studied. The first is a coastal jet off the northern California coast, and the second is a katabatic jet over Vatnajökull, Iceland. LÄS MER
3. Mesoscale Processes over the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis is to study mesoscale processes above the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction may have a large impact on the offshore conditions. It is only the last tens of years that offshore research has become more popular, and one reason for this is the increasing offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate estimates of wind speed and turbulence conditions in the marine environment. 4. Thermally driven wind modification in coastal areas and its influence on sound propagation with application to wind power
Sammanfattning : The objective of the current study is to investigate the wind modifications in coastal areas and also to see the impact of atmospheric conditions on long-range sound propagation over sea. This is important when planning where to place wind turbines. LÄS MER
5. Wind and atmospheric stability characteristics over the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : In recent years there has been an increase in offshore wind energy, which poses the need for accurate wind speed estimates in the marine environment, especially in coastal areas where most wind turbines will be placed. This thesis is focused on the Baltic Sea, which is a small, semi-enclosed sea where land-sea interaction play an important role in explaining the wind patterns. LÄS MER
