  1. 1. Coping with Stress : Regulation of the Caulobacter crescentus cell cycle in response to environmental cues

    Författare :Kristina Heinrich; Kristina Jonas; Emanuele Biondi; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Caulobacter crescentus; bacteria; cell cycle; stress; filamentation; cell morphology; DNA replication; cell division; molekylär biovetenskap; Molecular Bioscience;

    Sammanfattning : All organisms have to respond to environmental changes to maintain cellular and genome integrity. In particular, unicellular organisms like bacteria must be able to analyze their surroundings and rapidly adjust their growth mode and cell cycle program in response to environmental changes, such as changes in nutrient availability, temperature, osmolarity, or pH. 2. 2. Year-round production of forest seedlings under LED lamps : Biological and energetic implications of indoor cultivation

    Författare :Marco Hernandez Velasco; Uwe Zimmermann; Anders Mattsson; Frank Fiedler; Johanna Riikonen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Picea abies; Pinus sylvestris; year-round cultivation; forest seedlings; LED lamps; light quality; light quantity; daily light integral; adaptive lighting control; greenhouse integrated photovoltaics; agrivoltaics; seedling growth performance; short-day treatments; cold hardiness; light shock stress; Engineering Science; Teknisk fysik;

    Sammanfattning : Year-round cultivation of forest seedlings under light emitting diodes (LED) is a technology receiving increased attention from nurseries in the boreal forest regions. In these areas, the climate is characterized by strong seasonal fluctuations, resulting in short vegetation periods with narrow time windows for seedling transplanting and outdoor growth. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Analysis of thermal shock in brittle materials

    Författare :Marianne Collin; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :thermal shock; thermal stress; stress intensity; vickers indentation; alumina; silicon varbide whisker reinforced alumina;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns thermal shock damage of ceramicmaterials. More specifically the work is focused on theoreticaland practical aspects of a new technique for determining thethermal shock resistance of brittle materials. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Pathophysiology of blood-brain barrier, brain edema and cell injury following hyperthermia : New role of heat shock protein, nitric oxide and carbon monoxide : an experimental study in rat using light and electron microscopy

    Författare :Hari Shanker Sharma; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; blood-brain barrier; heat stress; hyperthermia; brain edema; serotonin; nitric oxide; carbon monoxide; heat shock protein; glial fibrillary acidic protein; myelin basic protein; opioids; histamine; catecholamines; naloxone; indomethacin; p-CPA; electron microscopy; immunocytochemistry; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Human Anatomy; anatomi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis deals with the molecular mechanisms of hyperthermia induced brain damage in rats. The results clearly establish that hyperthermia caused by 4 h heat stress at 38° C is associated with a breakdown of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) permeability which seems to be instrumental in causing brain edema and cell injury. 5. 5. A Chloroplast Localized Small Heat Shock Protein, Hsp21. Importance of Hsp21 in stress protection of transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana, recombinant expression and characterization of oxidation-dependent conformational changes

    Författare :Ulrika Härndahl; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; a-crystallin; sHsp; chaperone; amphipathic a-helix; oligomer; redox-regulated; methionine sulfoxidation; oxidative stress; regulation; protein structure; circular dichroism; mass spectrometry; fluorescence spectroscopy; Biochemistry; Metabolism; Biokemi;

    Sammanfattning : A specific group of heat shock proteins, the so called small heat shock proteins (sHsps), exists in all organisms but are especially abundant in plants. The sHsps prevent aggregation of other proteins (substrate proteins) during transient heat and oxidative stress. LÄS MER
