21. Ischemic Cerebrovascular Disease: Risk Factors and Outcome Predictors with special reference to the role of leukocytes and inflammatory mediators
Sammanfattning : Ischemic cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is usually a consequence of atherosclerosis and is the commonest cause of stroke. The identification of risk factors and outcome predictors and the initiation of preventive measures constitute the cornerstone of efforts to reduce the risk of stroke and improve outcome. LÄS MER
22. Electroencephalography for neurological prognostication after cardiac arrest
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the prognostic value of electroencephalography(EEG) in comatose patients resuscitated after cardiac arrest (CA), using both simplified continuous EEG monitoring (cEEG) and routine EEG. Background: Comatose survivors are admitted to an intensive care unit (ICU) to support vital functions. LÄS MER
23. Bedside monitoring of cerebral energy metabolism using intracerebral microdialysis during neuro intensive care
Sammanfattning : In clinical situations with raised intracranial pressure (ICP) and impending insufficient cerebral blood flow (ischaemia), bedside information about energy metabolism in the brain would be helpful. Microdialysis is a technique that makes it possible to monitor the interstitial concentrations of various compounds in an organ. LÄS MER
24. Effects of ionising and non-ionising radiation in cell systems and a rat model for immuno-therapy
Sammanfattning : The most malignant brain tumour, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), has an utterly bad prognosis. In spite of all available therapy, the mean survival time is less than a year. In the unique BRIGTT project (Brain Immuno Gene Tumour Therapy), patients at the Dept of Neurosurgery. LÄS MER
25. Long-term effects of acupuncture
Sammanfattning : In a retrospective follow-up study, n=202, long-term pain relief (>6 months) after a course of acupuncture treatments was found mainly among patients with chronic nociceptive pain while patients with neurogenic or psychogenic pain did not benefit much. In a placebo-controlled randomised single-blind long-term study with independent observer of chronic nociceptive low back pain, n=50, it was found that acupuncture, was significantly superior to true placebo in all outcome measurements, even more than 6 months after the treatment series.
