1. Recurrent acute otitis media - aetiology, diagnostics and prevention
Sammanfattning : Acute otitis media (AOM) is the most common bacterial infection in children. The clinical course varies from spontaneous recovery to life-threatening complications, and this variability mainly depends on the causative pathogen. LÄS MER
2. Genetic and immunological control of human myasthenia gravis
Sammanfattning : Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a classical autoimmune disease characterized by muscle weakness due to an immune attack against the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (AChR) on the post-synaptic membrane of the neuromuscular junction. Because of the involvement of multiple factors in the disease, the overall aims of this thesis were to uncover the regulation of candidate genes and the possible cellular mechanisms involved in the immuno-regulation of human MG. 3. The kynurenine pathway and development of schizophrenia : immunological and genetic aspects
Sammanfattning : Schizophrenia is a complex disorder with symptoms ranging from hallucinations to poor social functioning and cognitive deficits. Despite decades of research, the etiology of the disease remains puzzling. Genetic aberrations as well as exposure to infection during early life are associated with an increased risk for development of the disease. LÄS MER
4. Liver Transplantation-associated Food Allergy and Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Inflammation in Children - Clinical and Immunological Aspects
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on three recently described childhood-onset gastrointestinal disorders: liver transplantation-associated food allergy (LTFA), collagenous gastritis (CG) and eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Its aim was to gain additional understanding of both the clinical disease characteristics and the associated immunological aberrations in these conditions. LÄS MER
5. T cells in patients with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM) : an immunological study
Sammanfattning : There are several lines of evidence that T cells in patients with Multiple Myeloma (MM) and B-cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (B-CLL) are phenotypically aberrant. The overall aim of this thesis was to study T cells with a focus on TCR-signaling pathways in these two B-cell malignancies. The role of T-cells in B-CLL etiology was also examined. LÄS MER
