1. Molecular mechanisms underlying the activation of ALC1 nucleosome remodeling
Sammanfattning : Packaging DNA into chromatin represses essential DNA-based processes, such as transcription, DNA replication, and repair. To change the accessibility of DNA, cells have evolved a set of enzymes referred to as chromatin remodelers that act on the basic repeat unit of chromatin, the nucleosome. LÄS MER
2. Apoptosis And Excitotoxicity In The Death of Cultured And Grafted Dopaminergic Neurones
Sammanfattning : Over the past two decades, grafting of embryonic nigral tissue has developed into a feasible therapeutic strategy for Parkinson's disease (PD). It has become apparent that the degree of restoration of dopaminergic neurotransmission by the transplanted cells is highly correlated to the symptomatic relief. LÄS MER
3. High-resolution phenotypic profiling of a eukaryotic ribosome
Sammanfattning : All living cells contain ribosomes, complex macromolecular assemblies of ribonucleic acid (RNA) and proteins, responsible for synthesizing polypeptides in a process called translation. High-resolution three-dimensional ribosomal structures coupled with biochemical studies have paved the way in understanding the various mechanistic events during protein synthesis. LÄS MER
4. Synchrotron radiation studies of gas phase molecules : from hydrogen to DNA sugars
Sammanfattning : This thesis summarises experimental results on the molecular spectroscopy of gas phase molecules excited by synchrotron radiation in the VUV and soft X-ray regions. We have used three different detection techniques, photon induced fluorescence spectroscopy, photoionisation mass spectroscopy and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy to study molecular deuterium, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methanol, pyridine, pyridazine, pyrimidine, pyrazine, s-triazine, and 2-deoxy-D-ribose, the last one also known as the DNA sugar. 5. Interplay between Transcription and Homologous Recombination in the Presence of DNA Damage
Sammanfattning : The biochemical processes of DNA repair, replication and recombination compete for the same substrate, the DNA molecule. This competition is natural, as each process requires the same template. In order to resolve possible conflicts between these processes, when they take place on a particular stretch of DNA, certain crosstalk is expected. LÄS MER
