  1. 16. Regulation of Autoimmunity and Inflammation by microRNAs and Environmental Factors

    Författare :Neivis Tormo-Badia; Diabetes - immunovirologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Tolerance is crucial for maintaining immunological balance and avoid autoimmune diseases like type 1 diabetes and the inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis (UC). In Study I, we have investigated the regulatory role of a class of noncoding RNAs, the miRNAs, during thymocyte development of the where central tolerance is established. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Attenuation of Oxidative Stress, Inflammation and Colorectal Oncogenesis by Food Constituents: Ischaemia/Reperfusion Injury and Induced Colitis in Rodents

    Författare :Åsa Håkansson; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Colorectal cancer; Ischaemia Reperfusion; Rose hips; Colitis; Probiotics; Inflammation; Blueberry;

    Sammanfattning : The enteric microbiota is increasingly implicated as a central factor in the development of intestinal inflammation in humans and experimental animals, and the intestinal environment is considered important in both colorectal cancer development and modulation of mucosal immunity. Diet-induced changes in the different populations of the intestinal microbiota can be achieved by use of probiotic bacteria, dietary fibre and berries rich in phenolic compounds. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Towards a bacterial origin of irritable bowel syndrome

    Författare :Aldona Dlugosz; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Chlamydia;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is one of the most prevalent disorders and affects about 15% of the Swedish population. Patients with IBS suffer from abdominal pain and disturbed bowel function. Despite being so common, little is known about causality in IBS. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Role of antimicrobial peptides in combating shigellosis and in antibiotic-associated diarrhea

    Författare :Protim Sarker; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) constitute front-line components of innate immunity in multicellular organisms. AMPs are able to kill a wide range of pathogens and exhibit additional important functions such as chemotaxis, angiogenesis and wound healing. These peptides are constitutively expressed in immune and/or epithelial cells. LÄS MER

    Sammanfattning : Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic visceral pain disorder with female predominance, characterized by recurrent abdominal pain and disturbed bowel habits in the absence of an identifiable organic cause. This prevalent and debilitating disease, which accounts for a substantial economic and individual burden, lacks exact diagnostic tools and effective treatment, since its pathophysiology remains uncertain.
