1. Elucidating Genetic and Biochemical Aspects of the P1 and Sda Carbohydrate Histo-Blood Group Antigens
Sammanfattning : Human histo-blood groups are inherited polymorphic variants that occur in the molecular structures on the humanred blood cell (RBC) surface. Introducing foreign RBCs into a recipient lacking an antigen may activate the humoraldefence leading to a hemolytic transfusion reaction. LÄS MER
2. Identification and characterisation of SMIM1 variants determining the Vel blood group
Sammanfattning : The Vel blood group antigen is present on red blood cells from all humans except rare Vel-negative individuals, who can form antibodies to Vel in response to transfusion or pregnancy. It was first described in 1952 as a high incidence antigen, while the molecular background was recently discovered to be a 17-bp deletion in Small Integral Membrane Protein 1, that causes a frame-shift mutation and abolishes SMIM1 expression, thus creating a Vel-negative phenotype. 3. Expression of Tissue Antigens in Human Pluripotent Stem Cells and Alterations During Differentiation : Potential application in regenerative medicine for treatment of terminal cell and organ failure
Sammanfattning : The major limiting factor in the treatment of patients with end-stage organ failure is the insufficient number of human organs available for transplantation. An unlimited access to human cells, tissues and organs would also open up possibilities to treat several chronic diseases, such as diabetes, neurological and cardiovascular diseases, affecting millions of patients worldwide. 4. Studies of Thai blood group and platelet polymorphism. Implications for malaria susceptibility
Sammanfattning : The objectives of the thesis were to seek a better understanding of polymorphic RBC surface molecules in the Thai, and to investigate the role of certain blood groups in malarial invasion. MALDI-TOF MS was employed in Study I as an efficient method for genotyping to establish the common blood group and platelet antigen genotypes of 396 blood donors. LÄS MER
5. Genetics and Expression of Glycosphingolipids in the P1PK and GLOB Histo-Blood Group Systems
Sammanfattning : The glycosphingolipid (GSL) antigens in the clinically important P1PK and GLOB blood group systems are present on erythrocytes as well as other tissues and are so-called histo-blood group antigens. Blood group antigens of carbohydrate nature are products of enzymes, so-called glycosyltransferases, adding sugars in a step-wise manner to an acceptor substrate. LÄS MER
