11. Tissue engineering in blood vessels
Sammanfattning : Severely occluded coronary- and peripheral arteries, caused by atherosclerotic plaques, are treated with bypass surgery. Autologous veins are the most commonly used replacement graft. Among the patients that need a vascular bypass, 5-10% lack appropriate replacement veins due to previous surgery of bad quality of the vessels. LÄS MER
12. Regulation of Hematopoietic Stem Cells
Sammanfattning : This thesis is about the regulation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that represent rare cells residing in the bone marrow (BM) of adults. They are multipotent cells that have the capacity to differentiate to all mature cells of the blood system and have the capacity to self-renew, i.e. generate new HSCs. LÄS MER
13. Blood and Bone - Epidemiological studies on the association between blood and bone
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Preclinical and clinical studies have suggested that blood- and bone cells are interconnected. Aims: To study the association between hematological variables, specifically serotonin, erythropoietin (EPO), hemoglobin (Hb), neutrophil-, lymphocyte-, and platelet count, and bone mineral density (BMD), and/or risk for fractures (paper I-III). 14. Mitochondrial function in sepsis - Temporal evolvement of respiratory capacity in human blood cells
Sammanfattning : Sepsis is a devastating disease that is caused by the host’s response to an overwhelming infectious process. As sepsis progresses, organs distant from the site of infection become affected and sepsis-induced multiple organ failure ensues. LÄS MER
15. Bystander Cells and Prognosis in Hodgkin Lymphoma
Sammanfattning : Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is characterised histologically by a minority of malignant Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg (HRS) cells surrounded by benign cells, and clinically by a relatively good prognosis. The treatment, however, leads to a risk of serious side effects. LÄS MER
