  1. 1. On cellular sources for intimal hyperplasia after vascular interventions

    Författare :Stefan Mellander; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :intimal hyperplasia; vascular intervention; smooth muscle cell; blood-born mononuclear cell; prosthetic graft; balloon injury; pig; rabbit;

    Sammanfattning : Vascular interventions for the treatment of symptomatic atherosclerosis fail in up to 40 % of the cases during the first year. One important reason is the development of a narrowing process known as intimal hyperplasia (IH). The cells forming IH resemble smooth muscle cells (SMCs) from the media of the arterial wall. 2. 2. Thrombolysis in vascular surgery

    Författare :Linn Smith; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Background and aims: Thrombolysis is in common use in the treatment of acute forms of vascular disease. It may be used both systemically and locally, in the latter case through an endovascular approach, socalled catheter-directed thrombolysis. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Vascular Wall Responses to Bypass Grafting - Studies in Mice

    Författare :Klas Österberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Intimal hyperplasia; graft stenosis; smooth muscle cells; mice; cellular recruitment;

    Sammanfattning : Abstract Vein grafts are frequently used in bypass surgery for treatment of coronary artery disease and lower limb ischemia. Unfortunately the long-term patency is impaired by vein graft stenoses due to intimal hyperplasia (IH). It is assumed that exaggerated intimal thickening is initiated by vessel wall injuries or local flow disturbances. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Tissue engineering in blood vessels

    Författare :Gisela Helenius; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :tissue engineering; vascular graft; endothelial cells; smooth muscle cells; thrombogenicity; mechanical properties; scaffold; bacterial cellulose;

    Sammanfattning : Severely occluded coronary- and peripheral arteries, caused by atherosclerotic plaques, are treated with bypass surgery. Autologous veins are the most commonly used replacement graft. Among the patients that need a vascular bypass, 5-10% lack appropriate replacement veins due to previous surgery of bad quality of the vessels. LÄS MER

  5. 5. The role of the adventitia and perivascular tissue for the formation of intimal hyperplasia

    Författare :Per Fogelstrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Intimal hyperplasia; adventitia; perivascular tissue; smooth muscle cells; fibroblasts; balloon injury; vein graft; artificial graft;

    Sammanfattning : Symptomatic atherosclerosis is commonly treated with balloon angioplasty or bypass surgery. About 30% of the interventions will re-narrow within a year due to restenosis and graft-stenosis. Thickening of the luminal layer, the intima, is an important component in these side-effects. LÄS MER
