1. Redox effects on neutrophils in wound healing conducted by wound dressings and hyperbaric oxygen
Sammanfattning : The increased influx of neutrophils into chronic wounds results in increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO) and lipid peroxidation products (LPP), as well as a ROS-induced increase in protease levels. The NO and LPP impair the respiratory burst response of the neutrophils and reduce their capacity to kill bacteria and digest debris. LÄS MER
2. The efficacy of bacterial viruses against multi-resistant Escherichia coli: from isolation to pharmacology
Sammanfattning : The increase of multi-resistant bacteria highlights that the golden era of antibiotics is ending and that alternative treatmentsare urgently needed. Phages have been historically used to treat bacterial infections prior to the discovery of antibiotics and have gained renewed interest in the past decade. LÄS MER
3. Pharmacodynamic effects of antibiotics : studies on bacterial morphology, initial killing, postantibiotic effect and effecitive regrowth time
Sammanfattning : Pharmacodynamics of antibiotics deals with time course of drug activity and mechanisms of action of drugs on bacteria. In this thesis pharmacodynamic parameters have been studied after brief exposure of gram-positive bacteria to daptomycin, imipenem or vancomycin and after short exposure of gram-negative bacteria to amikacin, ampicillin, aztreonam, cefepime, cefotaxime, ceftazidime, ceftriaxone, cefuroxime, imipenem, mecillinal,11, or piperacillin. 4. Roles of secreted bacterial factors in modulation of host cell signalling
Sammanfattning : Pathogenic bacteria employ several secretion systems to release or inject virulence factors that may alter host cell processes, generate a replicative niche, and aid bacterial survival in adverse environments. This thesis presents my investigations on how bacterial factors can modulate host cell signalling mechanisms. LÄS MER
5. Genome Evolution and Niche Differentiation of Bacterial Endosymbionts
Sammanfattning : Most animals contain chronic microbial infections that inflict no harm on their hosts. Recently, the gut microflora of humans and other animals have been characterized. However, little is known about the forces that shape the diversity of these bacterial communities. LÄS MER
