1. In conversation with simulation: The application of numerical simulation to the design of structural nodal connections
Sammanfattning : The thesis explores methods for integration of structural analysis, design and production in a digital design environment. The somewhat ambiguous title implies the ambition to make such integration in relation to the explorative phase of the design process which is described by Donald Schön as having a conversational character. 2. Particle Characterization in the Exhaust Devices of Direct Injection Engines
Sammanfattning : Minimizing pollutants are of utmost importance to ensure sustainability in transportation. Particle emissions from internal combustion engines are especially harmful to human health, while also contributing to global warming. LÄS MER
3. Aggregates in Concrete Mix Design
Sammanfattning : The importance of studying the behaviour and properties of concrete can be highlighted by considering the fact that concrete is the most used man-made material in the world. The very first step in making concrete is its mix design and deciding the type and amount of constitutes used in the production of concrete which should fulfil the requirements of the final product. 4. Laser-Driven Particle Acceleration - Improving Performance Through Smart Target Design
Sammanfattning : Laser-driven particle acceleration makes use of sub-picosecond, pulsed, high-power laser systems, capable of producing intensities ~10^{19} W/cm^2 at the laser focus to form plasmas, and use ultra-relativistic and nonlinear dynamics to produce quasistatic acceleration fields. This allows electrons to be accelerated to ~100 MeV over sub-centimetre distances, while protons may be accelerated to the ~10 MeV regime. LÄS MER
5. Particle emissions from car brakes : The influence of contact conditions on the pad-to-rotor interface
Sammanfattning : Due to their adverse health effects emissions have been regulated for over three decades. Brake wear particulate matter is the most important non-exhaust source, however current knowledge is mainly limited to observational studies. LÄS MER
