1. The impact of loading-induced stress variation on the seismicity of active faults
Sammanfattning : Surface loads such as the ocean, atmosphere, and continental water, constantly modify the stress field of the Earth’s crust. Most earthquakes occur at tectonic plate boundaries and such stress perturbations on the active faults at the plate boundaries may trigger earthquakes. LÄS MER
2. Effects of deep excavations in soft clay on the immediate sourroundings-Analysis of the possibility to predict deformations and reactions against the retaining system
Sammanfattning : When excavating in an urban environment, the evaluation of the magnitude and distribution of ground movements is an important part of the design process, since excessive movements can damage adjacent buildings and utilities. In order to minimize movement of the surrounding soil, a retaining wall support system is used for deep excavations to provide lateral support. LÄS MER
3. Source analysis of multiplet earthquakes (two case studies in Iran)
Sammanfattning : Multiplet earthquakes are large earthquakes of similar magnitude which occur close in time in the same limited geographical area. They are not common but they considerably increase the potential hazard in the area in which they occur. LÄS MER
4. Multiscale granular mechanics: A neutron diffraction based experimental approach
Sammanfattning : Granular media (i.e., assemblies of grains, containing voids), such as sand, are highly complex materials, possessing inherently heterogeneous structure and properties that are manifested by the mobility and interaction of their constituent particles. Despite having been widely studied for centuries (i. LÄS MER
5. Strength and deformability of fractured rocks
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents a systematic numerical modeling framework to simulate the stress-deformation and coupled stress-deformation-flow processes by performing uniaxial and biaxial compressive tests on fractured rock models with considering the effects of different loading conditions, different loading directions (anisotropy), and coupled hydro-mechanical processes for evaluating strength and deformability behavior of fractured rocks. By using code UDEC of discrete element method (DEM), a series of numerical experiments were conducted on discrete fracture network models (DFN) at an established representative elementary volume (REV), based on realistic geometrical and mechanical data of fracture systems from field mapping at Sellafield, UK.
