  1. 1. Discourse in Statistical Machine Translation

    Författare :Christian Hardmeier; Joakim Nivre; Jörg Tiedemann; Marcello Federico; Lluís Màrquez; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistical machine translation; Discourse-level machine translation; Document decoding; Local search; Pronominal anaphora; Pronoun translation; Neural networks; Computational Linguistics; Datorlingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis addresses the technical and linguistic aspects of discourse-level processing in phrase-based statistical machine translation (SMT). Connected texts can have complex text-level linguistic dependencies across sentences that must be preserved in translation. However, the models and algorithms of SMT are pervaded by locality assumptions. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Gender and representation : investigations of bias in natural language processing

    Författare :Hannah Devinney; Henrik Björklund; Jenny Björklund; Christian Hardmeier; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; NLP; natural language processing; gender bias; social impact of AI; gendered pronouns; neopronouns; gender studies; topic modeling; Computer Science; datalogi; computational linguistics; datorlingvistik; genusvetenskap; gender studies;

    Sammanfattning : Natural Language Processing (NLP) technologies are a part of our every day realities. They come in forms we can easily see as ‘language technologies’ (auto-correct, translation services, search results) as well as those that fly under our radar (social media algorithms, 'suggested reading' recommendations on news sites, spam filters). 3. 3. Contributions to Shallow Discourse Parsing : To English and beyond

    Författare :Murathan Kurfalı; Robert Östling; Mats Wirén; Christian Hardmeier; Amir Zeldes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; discourse; discourse relations; shallow discourse parsing; transfer learning; multilinguality; low-resource nlp; Linguistics; lingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : Discourse is a coherent set of sentences where the sequential reading of the sentences yields a sense of accumulation and readers can easily follow why one sentence follows another. A text that lacks coherence will most certainly fail to communicate its intended message and leave the reader puzzled as to why the sentences are presented together. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Segmenting and Tagging Text with Neural Networks

    Författare :Yan Shao; Joakim Nivre; Jörg Tiedemann; Christian Hardmeier; Yue Zhang; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neural networks; sequence labelling; multilinguality; word segmentation; sentence segmentation; morpheme segmentation; transliteration; joint word segmentation and POS tagging;

    Sammanfattning : Segmentation and tagging of text are important preprocessing steps for higher-level natural language processing tasks. In this thesis, we apply a sequence labelling framework based on neural networks to various segmentation and tagging tasks, including sentence segmentation, word segmentation, morpheme segmentation, joint word segmentation and part-of-speech tagging, and named entity transliteration.
