11. Allochthonous and autochthonous carbon sources of lake bacterioplankton
Sammanfattning : Organic substrates for pelagic bacteria are derived from dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in the water column that originates either from primary production from within the lake itself (autochthonous), or import of organic matter from the terrestrial watershed (allochthonous production). This thesis addresses the utilization of allochthonous versus autochthonous carbon (C) sources by lake bacterioplankton. LÄS MER
12. Fluxes and transformation of carbon in the Siberian shelf seas under changing environment
Sammanfattning : The Arctic is especially vulnerable to the increased air temperature caused by emissions of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, carbon dioxide being one of them. In this thesis, both fieldwork and modelling of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea) have been carried out to investigate the carbon system in this region. 13. Uptake Processes of Polychlorinated Biphenyls at the Base of the Pelagic Food Web
Sammanfattning : Hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) are persistent, toxic to biota and are known to bioaccumulate in food webs. In this thesis, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were used as model compounds to study the fate and transport of HOCs in the aquatic environment. LÄS MER
14. Carbon stocks and fluxes in a young Siberian larch (Larix sibirica) plantation in Iceland
Sammanfattning : The understanding of how forests function with respect to carbon (C) balance and its interaction with the climate system is a fundamental question in climate change research. Another important question is how large the sink for CO2 is in northern forests and how it varies with forest type, management, stand age and with external factors, such as climate variability. 15. Ecosystems in the Anthropocene: the role of cropland management for carbon and nitrogen cycle processes
Sammanfattning : Through deforestation and conversion of natural ecosystems to croplands and pastures, have humans released vast amounts of carbon (C) dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Roughly one third of the cumulative anthropogenic emissions until today stem from these practices, the remainder being mostly due to fossil fuel combustion. LÄS MER
