21. Oxidative stress and proteolysis in the lens. Effects of anti-inflammatory drugs
Sammanfattning : Oxidative stress has been implied in formation of age-related cataract. The objectives of this thesis were to study redox regulation of proteolysis and oxidative/antioxidative effects of anti-inflammatory substances in human lens epithelial cells (HLEC) and intact mouse lenses. 22. Mitochondrial involvement in cell death : release of pro-apoptotic proteins
Sammanfattning : In addition to the role of the mitochondria in energy metabolism, these organelles play a key role in cell death signaling. In particular, mitochondrial alterations, such as stimulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, decreased ATP synthesis, loss of membrane potential and the release of pro-apoptotic proteins from the mitochondrial intermembrane space (IMS), have been shown to be involved in, and often responsible for, various manifestations of cell death. 23. In vitro studies on anti-leukemic effects of tetracycline's analogues and cyclophosphamide
Sammanfattning : Leukemia is a heterogeneous group of hematological malignancies that originate from the bone marrow. Leukemias are classified as acute or chronic. Although acute leukemia affects patients of all ages, acute lymphoid leukemia is predominant in children and young adults while acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is predominant in the elderly. LÄS MER
24. Mechanisms and time course of cell death in embryonic nigral tissue and intrastriatal transplants
Sammanfattning : Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder and severely affects about one in a hundred persons over the age of fifty years. In PD, there is a reduced striatal concentration of the neurotransmittor dopamine, mainly caused by a degeneration of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. LÄS MER
25. A molecular characterization of selected cecropins and cysteine proteinases in Drosophila
Sammanfattning : Insects that have been infected with bacteria produce antibacterial peptides. Among the most potent antibacterial peptides in Drosophila are the cecropins. This work describes the cloning and expression studies of the CecC gene, which completes the picture of the cecropin locus in Drosophila melanogaster. LÄS MER
