  1. 21. Conifer Evolution, from Demography and Local Adaptation to Evolutionary Rates : Examples from the Picea genus

    Författare :Jun Chen; Martin Lascoux; Ulf Lagercrantz; Matt Olson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Speciation; Demographics; clinal variation; convergent evolution; transcriptome; small regulatory RNA; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär funktionsgenomik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Functional Genomics; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Genetics; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär genetik;

    Sammanfattning : Evolutionary process can be inferred at three different levels: the species level, the population level and the molecular level. In this thesis, I applied approaches at these three levels and aimed to get a comprehensive picture of conifer evolution, from speciation and demography to geographic variation and local adaptation, and then to the molecular evolution of proteins and small regulatory RNAs. 2. 22. Genetics and Growth Regulation in Salmonella enterica

    Författare :Jessica M. Bergman; Diarmaid Hughes; Dan I. Andersson; Måns Ehrenberg; Stanley Maloy; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; tufA; tufB; EF-Tu; ppGpp; Stringent response; RNase E; RNA turnover; Post-transcriptional regulation; rpoB; rpoS; Growth in stationary phase; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Molekylär genetik; Molecular Genetics; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Most free-living bacteria will encounter different environments and it is therefore critical to be able to rapidly adjust to new growth conditions in order to be competitively successful. Responding to changes requires efficient gene regulation in terms of transcription, RNA stability, translation and post-translational modifications. LÄS MER

  3. 23. Rates and patterns of bryophyte molecular evolution

    Författare :Anna-Malin Linde; Ulf Lagercrantz; Nils Cronberg; D. Magnus Eklund; Jonathan Shaw; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biologi med inriktning mot evolutionär funktionsgenomik; Biology with specialization in Evolutionary Functional Genomics;

    Sammanfattning : Plants have been growing on land for at least 450 million years. The bryophytes comprising the three phyla liverworts, mosses and hornworts, are considered to be the closest extant relatives to the plants that colonized land. LÄS MER

  4. 24. Deciphering molecular mechanisms in the evolution of new functions

    Författare :Hind Abdalaal; Joakim Näsvall; Paul Rainey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolvability; functional trade-offs; collateral toxicity; duplication and amplification; Biologi med inriktning mot mikrobiologi; Biology with specialization in Microbiology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : The evolution of new genes and functions is considered to be a major contributor to biological diversity in organisms. Through de novo origination, “duplication and divergence”, and horizontal gene transfer, organisms can acquire new genetic material that can evolve to perform novel functions. LÄS MER

  5. 25. Genomic and transcriptomic investigation of reproductive incompatibility in Drosophila

    Författare :Guilherme Costa Baião; Lisa Klasson; Alistair Darby; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wolbachia; Drosophila; Drosophila paulistorum; Differential Gene Expression; Reproductive Incompatibility; Reproductive Isolation; Comparative Genomics; Transcriptomics; RNA-Seq; Heteroplasmy; Mitochondria; Genomic conflict; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär evolution; Biology with specialization in Molecular Evolution;

    Sammanfattning : Both nuclear and cytoplasmic elements can contribute to the emergence of reproductive incompatibilities that influence evolution and speciation. In the projects that compose this thesis, we use genomics and transcriptomics to study some of those elements in Drosophila. LÄS MER
