  1. 11. Synchronization for Multicarrier Systems

    Författare :Daniel Landström; Institutionen för elektro- och informationsteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Signal processing; Signalbehandling; Frequency estimation; Time estimation; Maximum-Likelihood; Synchronization; OFDM; DMT;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis has synchronization of Multicarrier systems, more specifically Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems, as the main theme. The thesis addresses two areas, the first proposing and analyzing time and frequency estimators for OFDM systems, the second investigating more practical issues around these estimators. LÄS MER

  2. 12. Fertile grounds? : Collective strategies and the political ecology of soil management in Uganda

    Författare :Elina Andersson; LUCSUS; []
    Nyckelord :SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; political ecology; land degradation; soil fertility; smallholder farmers; collective action; gender; action research; Uganda;

    Sammanfattning : Proceeding from land degradation and soil fertility decline in sub-Saharan African smallholder agriculture and drawing on empirical research with smallholder farmers in Tororo district in south-eastern Uganda (2010-2012), this thesis identifies local collective strategies in response to changing livelihood conditions. In an attempt to co-produce knowledge with a transformative potential, the thesis also illustrates how action research can be employed to envision, implement and evaluate a locally anchored practice to improve soil fertility, namely the use of human urine as a crop fertilizer. 3. 13. The Integration of MILLION into the English System of Number Words : A Diachronic Study

    Författare :Donald MacQueen; Merja Kytö; Raymond Hickey; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; number-word universals; historical corpus linguistics; variationist study; American vs British English; newspapers; grammaticalization; iconicity; gradience; English language; Engelska språket; Linguistics; lingvistik;

    Sammanfattning : This corpus-based variationist study traces the history of the English number word MILLION from its first attested use in the 14th century, focusing on the diachronic shift in function from one of heading its noun phrase (NP), as in the obsolescent (Obs) construction three millions of citizens, to one of a post-determiner of its NP head, as in Present-day English (PdE) three million citizens. The authentic historical materials used include both numerous electronic linguistic corpora and, more innovatively, very-large-scale general collections available online, especially historical newspaper collections from the US and UK comprising tens of billions of words. 4. 14. The evolution of ribonucleotide reductases

    Författare :Daniel Lundin; Anthony Poole; Britt-Marie Sjöberg; Christos Ouzounis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; ribonucleotide reductase; horizontal gene transfer; phylogeny; protein classification; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) catalyses the transformation of RNA building blocks, ribonucleotides, to DNA building blocks, deoxyribonucleotides. This is the only extant reaction pathway for de novo synthesis of DNA building blocks and the enzyme is thus necessary for life. RNR is found in all but a few organisms. LÄS MER

  5. 15. Natural resources and sustainable energy : Growth rates and resource flows for low-carbon systems

    Författare :Simon Davidsson; Mikael Höök; Gert Jan Kramer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; low-carbon technology; renewable energy; energy transitions; critical materials; energy metals; material flows; net energy; EROI; life cycle assessment; LCA; growth curves; curve fitting; resource depletion; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Naturresurser och hållbar utveckling;

    Sammanfattning : Large-scale deployment of low-carbon energy technologies is important for counteracting anthropogenic climate change and achieving universal energy access. This thesis explores potential growth rates of technologies necessary to reach a more sustainable global energy system, the material and energy flows required to commission these technologies, and potential future availability of the required resources.
