6. Taurine and dopamine-related effects of ethanol. An experimental study in rodents
Sammanfattning : The reinforcing properties of alcohol (ethanol) are associated with activation of the mesolimbic dopamine system and the concomitant increase in dopamine in the nucleus accumbens (nAc). Changes in this system are thought to be a predominant underlying factor in promoting excessive alcohol intake and alcohol use disorder. LÄS MER
7. Taurine and Glutathione in cerebrospinal fluid and plasma from patients with psychiatric disorders and healthy controls
Sammanfattning : A growing body of results indicate that immunological alterations and oxidative stress are of importance in various mental disorders. The inflammatory changes are possible to detect both in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and different psychiatric disorder exhibit similar changes indicating a common underlying mechanism. 8. Sulfur amino acids and their metabolites in patients with renal failure : relation to nutritional status and cardiovascular disease
Sammanfattning : Patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) have a high prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD), malnutrition and diabetes mellitus (DM) and exhibit several abnormalities in amino acid metabolism. The aims of this thesis were to assess alterations in sulfur amino acids and related sulfur compounds in relation to nutritional status, CVD and DM in CRF patients. LÄS MER
9. On amino acid neurotransmitters in the spinal cord motor nuclei
Sammanfattning : Using pre- and post-embedding immunocytochemistry, the distribution of six amino acid neurotransmitter candidates, with special reference to y-amino-butyric acid (GABA), glycine and glutamate was examined in boutons apposing somata and dendrites in the lumbar motor nuclei of the cat spinal cord. The monosynaptic connection between muscle spindle I a afferents and motoneurons regarding content of neuroactive amino acid and complement of amino acid receptors in the postsynaptic membrane was studied in the rat. 10. Amino acid conjugation of fatty acids as a novel pathway in lipid metabolism
Sammanfattning : Peroxisomes are cell organelles that play an important role in the metabolism of a variety of lipids including very long chain fatty acids, dicarboxylic acids, bile acids, and xenobiotic carboxylic acids to name a few. To accomplish these tasks peroxisomes contain many proteins involved in lipid metabolism including members of the Type I acyl-CoA thioesterase/acyltransferase protein family. LÄS MER
