    Sammanfattning : Traumatic spinal cord injury leads to full or partial paralysis and loss of sensation below the level of injury. The annual incidence of spinal cord injury in the United States is 3-5 per 100,000 and in Sweden is 1.5-2 per 100,000. Glial cells, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system (CNS) make up a totally different milieu and characteristics than the distinguishing qualities of the peripheral nervous system (PNS), where the nerve cells are surrounded by Schwann cells.
