16. The role of regeneration in plant niche differentiation and habitat specialization
Sammanfattning : To predict the effects of environmental change and nature management on the distribution of plant species, it is crucial to understand the mechanisms of plant niche differentiation and habitat specialization. The importance to habitat specialization of particular plant traits and requirement of the regenerative phase of the plants life has received scanty interest. LÄS MER
17. Abiotic stress and plant-microbe interactions in Norway spruce
Sammanfattning : Norway spruce (Picea abies) is a dominant tree species in boreal forests with extensive ecological and economic value. Climate change is threatening these ecosystems, with rising temperatures impacting cold hardening and increasing drought stress in regions experiencing lower precipitation. LÄS MER
18. Little strokes fell great oaks : small RNA in potato and Phytophthora infestans interactions
Sammanfattning : Small RNAs (sRNAs) are non-coding RNAs of approximately 20-30 nucleotides in length. sRNAs bind to Argonaute proteins (AGOs) an integrated partner of the RISC complex. sRNAs act as templates for RISC to recognize complementary mRNA transcripts which can be cleaved by AGOs and thereby cause gene inactivity. 19. Exploring the role of gene duplications in plant-insect interactions
Sammanfattning : As evolutionary biologists, we are often curious about the genomic origins of our favorite adaptations. Although some innovations certainly arose de novo, many more originated through the process of whole-gene or within-gene duplication. LÄS MER
20. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants.
