1. Plant pathogen defense: Signalling, resistance and cell death
Sammanfattning : Pathogenic microorganisms are present everywhere in nature and infect both animals and plants. Phytopathogenic microorganisms cause diseases on plants, and are responsible for crop loss amounting in the order billions of dollars annually. LÄS MER
2. Conifer chemical defense : Rugulation of bark beetle colonization and pheromone emission
Sammanfattning : Terpenes and phenols are of importance in conifer defense against insects and pathogens. Knowledge about tree chemical defense is vital for developing practical methods to maintain healthy forests. LÄS MER
3. Barley defense genes against aphids
Sammanfattning : Aphids are insect pests with major importance worldwide. By feeding from plant phloem, they directly withdraw nutrients. The feeding injury is often visible in the form of leaf rolling, chlorosis, necrosis or plant deformation. Their pest status is attributed also to vectoring of plant viruses. LÄS MER
4. Ecology and Evolution of Resistance to Herbivory : Trichome Production in Arabidopsis lyrata
Sammanfattning : In this thesis, I examine variation in occurrence and performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants of the perennial herb Arabidopsis lyrata. I combine field studies and genetic analysis to (1) examine the function of trichomes as a resistance character in natural populations, (2) compare the magnitude of population differentiation in trichome-production and at putatively neutral marker loci, (3) examine the molecular genetic basis of trichome-production, and (4) quantify the effects of herbivore removal on population growth and relative performance of glabrous and trichome-producing plants. 5. Seagrass productivity : from plant to system
Sammanfattning : Seagrasses form one of the most productive habitats on earth and are recognized as very efficient carbon sinks. The levels and patterns of productivity within and across different seagrass systems vary widely due to natural or human-induced factors. LÄS MER
