1. On protein structure, function and modularity from an evolutionary perspective
Sammanfattning : We are compounded entities, given life by a complex molecular machinery. When studying these molecules we have to make sense of a diverse set of dynamical nanostructures with wast and intricate patterns of interactions. LÄS MER
2. Structural changes during cellulose composite processing
Sammanfattning : Two approaches for creating a new all-cellulose composite material have been studied: the biosynthesis of compartmentalised bacterial cellulose fibril aggregates and the compression moulding of commercial chemical wood pulps processed with only water. The objective was to study the structural changes during processing and the complexity of relating the mechanical properties of the final biocomposites to the nanoscale structure was highlighted. 3. Biobased carbon fibers from solution spun lignocellulosic precursors
Sammanfattning : Carbon fibers (CFs) have excellent mechanical properties and a low density, making themattractive as a reinforcing fiber in composites. The use of CFs is limited to high-end applications, since they are produced from an expensive fossil-based precursor via an energy-intensivemanufacturing process, explaining the need for cheaper CFs from renewables. 4. Materials Science of Multilayer X-ray Mirrors
Sammanfattning : This thesis treats the reflective and structural properties of multilayer structures. Soft X-ray multilayer mirrors intended as near-normal incidence reflective optics and polarizers in the water window (λ=2.4-4.4 nm) are the main focus. LÄS MER
5. Lignin- and PAN-based carbon fibres as negative electrodes for alkali-ion batteries
Sammanfattning : The development of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) and potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have accelerated since they can now reach similar gravimetric energy densities as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) but with a lower environmental impact. Hard carbon is the most common negative electrode for SIBs and KIBs and can be made from renewable resources such as lignin. LÄS MER
