1. Nutrition, exercise and body composition in community-dwelling older adults : Effects on function, wellbeing and mortality
Sammanfattning : Background: The demographic shift in society with more people reaching a high age provides new challenges for both society and the healthcare system.Aim: The overall aim of this thesis was to examine the impact of nutrition, exercise and body composition on function, wellbeing and mortality in community-dwelling older adults. 2. Exercising on the edge: mitochondrial and metabolic responses to intense training
Sammanfattning : Exercise and exercise training induces several physiological adaptations that increase the oxidative capacity of the muscles and improve glucose regulation. While the positive metabolic adaptations and effects on glucose regulation after exercise and exercise training have been extensively studied, negative outcomes have not. LÄS MER
3. Glycerol kinase deficiency. Clinical, biochemical, and genetic aspects
Sammanfattning : Glycerol kinase deficiency (GKD, MIM 307030) is an X-linked recessive inborn error of metabolism occurring isolated or in an Xp contiguous gene syndrome with adrenal hypoplasia and/or Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The gene syndrome is due to deletions in the p21 region on the X chromosome. LÄS MER
4. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training
Sammanfattning : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria.
