21. Novel methods to study mitochondrial gene expression and homeostasis
Sammanfattning : Mitochondria are semi-autonomous organelles that harbor one of the main cellular processes – energy conversion. Nutrients available in the environment are taken up by cells and transformed into metabolites that can be used for synthesis of ATP, the energy currency of the cell. LÄS MER
22. Mechanism of conditional repression of human osteocalcin gene activity by glucocorticoids
Sammanfattning : Bone is one of the major target sites of steroid hormone action. Steroid hormones like cortisol, vitamin D and estradiol are responsible for principle events associated with bone formation and resorption. LÄS MER
23. Development of nonviral gene delivery and of anti-gene reagents
Sammanfattning : Although significant progress has been made in the basic science and applications of various non-viral gene delivery systems, the majority of non-viral approaches are still much less efficient than viral vectors, especially for in vivo gene delivery, Therefore, non-viral gene delivery must be developed in order to increase the efficiency of in vivo delivery. Moreover, a novel anti-gene reagent was developed for sequence-specific gene silencing. LÄS MER
24. Towards Gene Therapy of Osteopetrosis
Sammanfattning : The goal in this thesis is development of gene therapy for malignant infantile osteopetrosis (IMO), a rare but severe genetic bone disease. The concept of osteopetrosis implies dysfunction or lack of osteoclasts, the bone resorbing cells in our body, resulting in failure of normal bone breakdown. LÄS MER
25. Studies of myc gene expression and a novel endoribonuclease activity
Sammanfattning : The general aim of this work was to study the regulation of cellular oncogene expression, with emphasis on the c-myc gene, which is de-regulated in several human and animal tumors. The steady-state expression level of c-myc mRNA or protein was analyzed in panels of human Blymphoid cell lines with different growth and transformation properties, and the general observation was a co-variation between high c-myc expression and a more malignant phenotype of the cell lines.
