   Sammanfattning : The purpose of this dissertation is to study the fantastic in the tales of the Italian children’s author Gianni Rodari. This analysis is grounded in the hypothesis that the fantastic is primarily characterized by two esthetic qualities, play and lightness, both of which are manifested at different levels in these texts, as well as in the relation between children and adults.    Sammanfattning : The present dissertation investigates the use of the fantastic and its functions in contemporary prose, the initial hypothesis being that the fantastic is not historically exhausted, but continues to be productive. The major part of this study consists of a close reading of four novels printed between 1995 and 2001: Marie Hermanson’s Värddjuret (1995), Majgull Axelsson’s Aprilhäxan (1997), Karen Duve’s Regenroman (1999) and Elfriede Kern’s Schwarze Lämmer (2001).    Sammanfattning : This dissertation concentrates on the textual analysis of five short stories from the period 1962-1910, all of which share the same characteristic: they all present the coexistence of a natural and a supernatural domain, being these two domains incompatible according to the premises proposed by the text. Considering the historical time in which these stories appear, a period in which a faith in reason as the means to achieve ‘civilisation’ and ‘progress’ predominates, the coexistence of these two orders in a zone of disquieting ambiguity appears as a challenge to the hegemony of reason and, in an extended sense, as a challenge to the modernisation project.    Sammanfattning : Bearing in mind that the literary fantastic may function as a subversive mode of writing that questions the dominant society’s hierarchy of norms and values as well as its notions of truth and reality (Jackson), this dissertation studies the forms and functions of the fantastic in four narratives by Massimo Bontempelli’s (1878 – 1960). This is an argument that hitherto has not been the subject of any more thoroughgoing study by critics of this Italian author. LÄS MER
