  1. 1. Lake sedimentary archives of medieval mining and smelting in Sweden : tracking environmental changes from site to landscape

    Författare :Erik Myrstener; Richard Bindler; Christian Bigler; Elinor Andrén; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; environmental science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : While the environmental impact of the industrial age is massive, including climate change, pollution, microplastics and habitat loss, our influence reaches further back than many recognize. In Sweden, an early and important activity with large potential impact was the mining and smelting of iron, copper and silver ores over the last ~800 years. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Credible targets for environmental management : evaluating reconstructions of reference values for ecological status in surface waters

    Författare :Salar Valinia; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : In the year 2000, countries of the European Union agreed to harmonise water management by implementing the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). The WFD uses good ecological status as the overall goal, which is defined as minor deviation from an undisturbed state. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Arctic Ocean benthic foraminifera preservation and Mg/Ca ratios : Implications for bottom water palaeothermometry

    Författare :Natalia Barrientos; Helen Coxall; Martin Jakobsson; Steve Barker; Stockholms universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Reconstructions of Arctic Ocean palaeotemperatures are needed to disentangle natural variability from anthropogenic changes and understand the role of ocean heat transport in forcing or providing feedbacks on Arctic climate change. Despite known complications with calcareous microfossil preservation in Arctic Ocean sediments, calcareous benthic foraminifera can be common in interglacial sequences. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Intramolecular isotope analysis reveals plant ecophysiological signals covering multiple timescales

    Författare :Thomas Wieloch; Jürgen Schleucher; Mats Nilsson; Gerd Gleixner; Lisa Wingate; Umeå universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Our societies' wellbeing relies on stable and healthy environments. However, our current lifestyles, growth-oriented economic policies and the population explosion are leading to potentially catastrophic degradation of ecosystems and progressive disruption of food chains. 5. 5. The development and implementation of software for palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatological research : the Bugs Coleopteran Ecology Package (BugsCEP)

    Författare :Philip Buckland; Roger Engelmark; Geoffrey Lemdahl; Paul Sinclair; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; Quaternary geology; environmental archaeology; quaternary science; Coleoptera; beetles; database; environmental reconstructions; climate reconstructions; software; Mutual Climatic Range; MCR; palaeoentomology; Kvartärgeologi; Archaeology; Arkeologi; Archaeology; arkeologi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis documents the development and application of a unique database orientated software package, BugsCEP, for environmental and climatic reconstruction from fossil beetle (Coleoptera) assemblages. The software tools are described, and the incorporated statistical methods discussed and evaluated with respect to both published modern and fossil data, as well as the author’s own investigations.
