  1. 6. Diversity and Ecosystem Functioning : Redundancy and Resilience in Freshwater Bacterial Communities

    Författare :Hannes Peter; Lars J. Tranvik; Eva S. Lindström; Silke Langenheder; Nelson G. Hairston; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; ecosystem functioning; bacteria; fresh water; biofilms; multifunctionality; ecological networks; perturbation; fragility; Biologi med inriktning mot limnologi; Biology with specialization in Limnology;

    Sammanfattning : Bacteria are immensely diverse and hold key-positions in essentially all biogeochemical cycles. In freshwater ecosystems, bacteria degrade and mineralize organic compounds, linking the pool of dissolved organic matter to higher trophic levels. LÄS MER

  2. 7. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Författare :Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Sammanfattning : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 3. 8. Linking functional traits and cultural ecosystem services in urban areas through human preferences

    Författare :Julie Goodness; Erik Andersson; Thomas Elmqvist; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Functional traits; ecosystem services; cultural ecosystem services; urban; cities; human perception; preferences; ecosystem management; vetenskap om hållbar utveckling; Sustainability Science;

    Sammanfattning : Urban areas are now the daily lived experience for the majority of the world’s people, and it is therefore important to explore what kind of ecological communities and corresponding ecosystem functions and services are being generated in these environments. Urban areas are shaped by a variety of factors, but arguably one of the most influential is that of people, in terms of how their preferences and active selective choices for biota play out in the landscape. 4. 9. Microbial Ecosystem Functions Along the Steep Oxygen Gradient of the Landsort Deep, Baltic Sea

    Författare :Petter Thureborn; Sara Sjöling; Mats Grahn; Matthias Labrenz; Södertörns högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial ecology; ecosystem functions; microbial community; bacteria; archaea; metagenomics; metatranscriptomics; oxygen gradient; hypoxia; sediment; Baltic Sea; Environmental Studies; Miljövetenskapliga studier; Östersjö- och Östeuropaforskning; Baltic and East European studies;

    Sammanfattning : Through complex metabolic interactions aquatic microbial life is essential as a driver of ecosystem functions and hence a prerequisite for sustaining plant and animal life in the sea and on Earth. Despite its ecological importance, information on the complexity of microbial functions and how these are related to environmental conditions is limited. LÄS MER

  5. 10. Radionuclides in the Baltic Sea : Ecosystem models and experiments on transport and fate

    Författare :Linda Kumblad; Nils Kautsky; Ulrik Kautsky; Michael Gilek; Michael Thorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; radionuclide; baltic sea; ecosystem model; ecosystem dynamics; risk assessment; safety assessment; benthic invertebrates; bioturbation; bioaccumulation; remobilisation; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : Manmade radionuclides have been introduced to the environment for almost a century. The main source has been the nuclear weapons testing programmes, but accidental releases from the nuclear power production industries have also contributed. The risk to humans from potential releases from nuclear facilities is evaluated in safety assessments. LÄS MER
