    Sammanfattning : The National Heritage Board (Riksantikvarieämbetet) and Collegium Antiquitatum were established during the seventeenth century to safeguard the historical and antiquarian interests of the Swedish state. The civil servants who worked within these institutions were called antiquarians, and they were given the task of seeking out those ancient remains with which ”the fatherland could be illustrated.     Sammanfattning : The problem forming the basis of this study is why Ling gymnastics, a product of the early 19th Century, was constantly practised in Swedish state-run schools during the 1950s despite the fact that, from the beginning of the 20th Century, it had been questioned by scientists and faced stiff competition from sport. It examines how culturally determined ways of thinking guided actions in concrete situations, and covers various aspects such as the public and the private, favors and reciprocity, aristocratic status, office-holding, and by extension the human aspects of state formation.
