  1. 1. Cyclic peptides as biological tools : Applications for diagnosis and therapeutics in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19

    Författare :Camilla Eriksson; Ulf Göransson; Sunithi Gunasekera; Christian Becker; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Scaffold peptides; peptide grafting; rheumatoid arthritis; SARS-CoV-2; autoantibodies; peptide synthesis; pharmacognosy;

    Sammanfattning : The overall aims of the projects included in this thesis were to design, synthesize and evaluate cyclic peptide scaffolds grafted with biological epitopes for their ability to bind antibodies in rheumatoid arthritis and COVID-19 sera. One of the main outcomes of this thesis was the observation that scaffold peptides grafted with target epitopes efficiently neutralized anti-citrullinated protein autoantibodies (ACPA) from rheumatoid arthritis patients. 2. 2. Defense-peptides against mycobacteria

    Författare :Charlotte M A Linde; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Antimicrobial peptides; NK-lysin; granulysin; PR-39; Mycobacterium;

    Sammanfattning : Several members of the genus Mycobacterium can cause serious infections in both man and animal. One of the world's most serious infectious diseases, tuberculosis, is caused by the pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Specific defense to tuberculosis/mycobacteriosis is dependent on the individual's ability to mount a proficient immune response. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Cell-penetrating peptides for oligonucleotide delivery : Design and uptake mechanisms

    Författare :Staffan Lindberg; Ülo Langel; Arwyn Jones; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell-penetrating peptides; gene therapy; scavenger receptors; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Sammanfattning : The use of oligonucleotides for gene therapy has the potential to efficiently treat a plethora of diseases with minimal side effects. However, the use of oligonucleotides is hampered by the properties of these molecules, which make it essentially impossible for them to permeate the cellular membrane. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Relish and the Regulation of Antimicrobial Peptides in Drosophila melanogaster

    Författare :Marika Hedengren Olcott; Barbara Taylor; Jean-Marc Reichhart; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drosophila immunity; NF-kappaB; Relish; antimicrobial peptides; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster has been a powerful model system in which to study the immune response. When microorganisms breach the mechanical barrier of the insect, phagocytosing cells and a battery of induced antimicrobial molecules rapidly attack them. These antimicrobial peptides can reach micromolar concentrations within a few hours. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Peptide Conjugates as Useful Molecular Tools

    Författare :Adam T. Ślósarczyk; Lars Baltzer; Knud J. Jensen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; peptide conjugates; designed peptides; polypeptides; molecular recognition; linker; linking technology; bioconjugation; conjugation; conjugates; Kemi; Chemistry; Chemistry with specialization in Bioorganic Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot bioorganisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : The conjugation of a small organic molecule to synthetic polypeptides from a designed set has been shown to give rise to binders with high affinity and selectivity for the phosphorylated model proteins α-casein and β-casein but not for ovoalbumin. The small organic molecule that was used for this purpose is comprised of two di-(2-picolyl)amine groups assembled on a dimethylphenyl scaffold, and is capable of complexing two Zn2+ ions to form chelates that bind the phosphate ion.
