11. Quasicrystal Approximants in the RE-Au-SM systems (RE = Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb; SM = Si, Ge) : Syntheses, structures and properties
Sammanfattning : In this study, new Tsai-type 1/1 quasicrystal approximants (ACs) in the RE-Au-SM systems (RE = Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb; SM = Si, Ge) were synthesized using high temperature synthesis techniques such as self-flux, arc-melting-annealing and novel arc-melting-self-flux methods. The syntheses not only provided appropriate samples for the intended structural and physical property measurements but could also be adapted to other systems, especially where crystal growth is a challenge. 12. Crystal Structures in GaAs Nanowires: Growth and Characterization
Sammanfattning : With their nanometer size cross-section and high aspect ratio, semiconducting nanowires have properties that make them promising as building blocks in future electronic and optoelectronic devices. Because of their small size, their optical and electrical properties can differ from their bulk counterparts, and their geometry allows for material combinations not accessible in thin films. LÄS MER
13. The Zr-Cu, Hf-Cu, Zr-Ni and Hf-Ni systems : phase diagrams and crystal structures of intermediate phases

14. Controlling function by structure-intermolecular interactions and crystal engineering with N-donor ligands
Sammanfattning : In the solid state regime, crystal engineering based on non-covalent synthesis requires an intuition about the intermolecular forces that can dictate the molecular architecture. Hydrogen bonds have become an instrumental tool in the self assembly and supramolecular chemistry. LÄS MER
15. Solving Mysteries and Outwitting Transitions : Investigating the Incommensurate Crystal Structures of AuIn and Sn3Sb2
Sammanfattning : This thesis introduces two new incommensurate alloys. AuIn shows variable amounts of modulation, depending on the measurement temperature. At 400°C the diffraction pattern shows diffuse scattering and a thallium iodide type Cmcm space group. LÄS MER
