  1. 16. Studies on the regulation of hepatic and intestinal lipid metabolism

    Författare :Kristina Kannisto; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Disturbances in the lipid homeostasis can result in a wide variety of different diseases and symptoms. This thesis is focused on the regulation of cholesterol metabolism and its relation to atherosclerosis development, and the effect of mitochondrial (mt)DNA depletion on hepatic β-oxidation of fatty acids. 2. 17. Regulation of bile acids by prebiotic food components : Studies in rat caecum and in serum of mice and humans

    Författare :Tannaz Ghaffarzadegan; Avdelningen för livsmedel och läkemedel; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Bile acids; Dietary fibre; Fat; Pectin; Guar gum; Barley; Lingonberry; Turmeric; Short-chain fatty acids; Gut microbiota; Caecum; Serum; Rat; Mice; Humans; GC-FID; UHPLC-MS;

    Sammanfattning : Bile acids (BA) are formed from cholesterol in the liver and, apart from being part of fat digestion, they also act as signalling molecules in several health-related physiological processes. BA composition is regulated by gut microbiota as well as dietary fibre (DF) and fat in the diet. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Side-chain oxidized oxysterols as metabolic regulators in vivo

    Författare :Zeina M F Ali; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Oxysterols are oxygenated derivatives of cholesterol characterized by a very short half- life and their ability to pass lipophilic membranes easily, and they are considered as important intermediates in the excretion pathways of cholesterol and its conversion to bile acids. Evidence has been presented that the production and flux of oxysterols in the brain may also be of some importance for cognitive functions. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Side-chain oxidized oxysterols as metabolic regulators in liver and brain

    Författare :Zeina M F Ali; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Oxysterols are oxygenated derivatives of cholesterol characterized by a very short half-life and their ability to pass lipophilic membranes easily, thus they are considered as important intermediates in cholesterol excretion pathways and its conversion to bile acids. The two major oxysterols in the circulation of human and mouse are 24S-hydroxycholesterol (24S-OH) and 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OH), which are formed by the cytochrome P450 enzymes cholesterol 24-hydroxylase (CYP46A1) and sterol 27-hydroxylase (CYP27A1), respectively.
