1. Consequences of the Domestication of Man’s Best Friend, The Dog
Sammanfattning : The dog was the first animal to be domesticated and the process started at least 15 000 years ago. Today it is the most morphologically diverse mammal, with a huge variation in size and shape. LÄS MER
2. Ecology of red admiral migration
Sammanfattning : The red admiral (Vanessa atalanta) is a migratory butterfly that can be found in North America, North Africa, Europe and some parts of Asia. In Europe the main part of the population spend winter in the Mediterranean region and the following spring leave this area to breed further to the north. LÄS MER
3. Population structure and phenotypic characterization as a basis for conservation and sustainable use of Reyna Creole Cattle in Nicaragua
Sammanfattning : The Reyna Creole cattle in Nicaragua is a local breed originating from the Bos taurus cattle brought to Latin America during the Spanish colonization in the fifteenth century. Reyna Creole cattle are today found in five herds. The primary use of the breed is to produce milk. The breed comprises about 650 purebred female animals. LÄS MER
4. Discovery of a novel pathway for an SLE-related disease complex in the canine breed Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever
Sammanfattning : The dog is an excellent model to study inherited complex diseases, due to its unique population history and haplotype structure. In this thesis, dogs from the breed Nova Scotia duck tolling retriever (NSDTR) have been used as a model for defining the genetic factors controlling a systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)-related disorder called immune-mediated rheumatic disease (IMRD) and a steroid responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA). 5. Bioinformatics mining for disease causing mutations : using the dog genome as a model for human disease
Sammanfattning : Humans and dogs share many common diseases, and it has been shown that the identification of mutations that cause disease in dogs can help unravel the genetic basis for a similar disease in humans. Mapping of traits and disease in dogs is not a new idea, but the sequencing of the whole dog genome, the creation of a dense SNP maps followed by the development of SNP arrays for high throughput genotyping has led to new facilitated mapping procedures.
