6. Effects of farmland heterogeneity at multiple spatial and temporal scales on house sparrow (Passer domesticus) population ecology
Sammanfattning : Strong declines of European farmland birds in recent decades are assumed to be caused by decreased food availability resulting from agricultural intensification and concomitant loss of farmland heterogeneity. One of the species suffering particularly strong declines in NW European countries is the house sparrow. LÄS MER
7. Spectral-element simulations of turbulent wall-bounded flows including transition and separation
Sammanfattning : The spectral-element method (SEM) is used to study wall-bounded turbulent flowsin moderately complex geometries. The first part of the thesis is devoted to simulations of canonical flow cases, such as temporal K-type transitionand turbulent channel flow, to investigate general resolution requirements and computational efficiency of the numerical code nek5000. 8. Housing Themselves : Transformations, Modernisation and Spatial qualities in Informal Settlements in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Sammanfattning : This thesis is an attempt to address issues of housingtransformation in informal settlements. Transformation ofhouses is seen to be associated with modernisation forceswhereby people adapt their houses to suit their needs anddesires. LÄS MER
9. Spatial metabolomics using Surface Sampling Capillary Electrophoresis Mass Spectrometry : New tool for direct surface sampling chemical analysis of biological samples
Sammanfattning : Analytical surface sampling tools enable direct chemical studies of solid biological samples, including morphologically diverse tissue, and provide both fast chemical analysis with minimum sample preparation and information about molecular spatial distribution. Spatially resolved investigations of tissue sections could help to reveal pathological mechanisms at specific tissue locations. LÄS MER
10. Studies of Baltic Sea plankton - spatial and temporal patterns
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines the spatial and temporal patterns of Baltic Sea phyto- and zooplankton. Studies of such patterns are important to gain a better understanding of the offshore nutrient dynamics of the Baltic Sea (Papers I and II) and how to manage eutrophication and invasive species in coastal areas (Papers III and IV).
