1. Molecular studies of pancreatic cancer: Characterization of the transforming growth factor beta signaling pathway
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, genetic abnormalities in pancreatic cancer were studied, with special emphasis on alterations of components involved in the transforming growth factor beta (TGFB) signaling pathway. In the first study, fluorescence in situ hybridization and cytogenetic analyses revealed aberrations of chromosome 18 in all 13 pancreatic carcinoma cell lines studied, in particular frequent breaks close to the centromere of chromosome arm 18q. 2. Smad signaling in hematopoietic stem cell biology
Sammanfattning : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are primitive tissue-specific somatic stem cells, responsible for the maintenance and replenishment of the bone marrow (BM) and subsequently the entire blood system. The never-ending ability to differentiate into all the mature hematopoietic lineages makes these HSCs attractive candidates for use in future regenerative medicine. LÄS MER
3. Small intestinal neuroendocrine tumours - Disease models, tumour development, and remedy
Sammanfattning : Small intestinal neuroendocrine tumours (SINETs) are malignant neoplasms which at the time of diagnosis often present with distant metastasis. The field of SINET research faces several challenges. LÄS MER
4. Molecular Genetic Studies of Sporadic and MEN1-Associated Endocrine Pancreatic Tumors
Sammanfattning : Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) may cause typical syndromes of hormone excess, or appear clinically non-functioning without hormonal symptoms. PETs occur sporadically, in association with the multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome, or rarely the von Hippel-Lindau syndrome. LÄS MER
5. Genetic studies of endocrine abdominal tumors
Sammanfattning : Pancreatic endocrine tumors (PETs) occur sporadically or in the familial multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) syndrome, whereas midgut carcinoids are nonfamilial, malignant endocrine tumors of the intestine. For these tumor entities morphological criteria are of limited use for prognostic prediction and selection of treatment. LÄS MER
