1. Human leukocyte antigen in sickness and in health : Ankylosing spondylitis and HLA in Sweden
Sammanfattning : The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) plays a major role in keeping us healthy, but some of the HLA alleles can contribute to disease susceptibility. One example is HLA-B*27, which confers increased susceptibility of ankylosing spondylitis and represents one of the strongest genetic associations found in any common human disease. LÄS MER
2. Image-based multi-omics data integration : Exploring whole-body PET/MRI, -omics data and body composition
Sammanfattning : Advanced body composition analysis with whole-body imaging could uncover novel associations between regional tissue composition and metabolic disease. Imiomics is an automated image analysis framework that enables large-scale integration of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and orthogonal technologies such as metabolomics and genomics for the detailed study of body composition. 3. Complex disease genetics : Utilising targeted sequencing and homogeneous ancestry
Sammanfattning : The complex disease investigations presented in this thesis aimed to provide new information regarding underlying genetics by using targeted sequencing and ethnically homogeneous cohorts. This work moved past current methodologies and addressed data stratification issues, that might have been hindering new findings. LÄS MER
4. Predictors and consequences of injurious falls among older adults : a holistic approach
Sammanfattning : The field of research on falls among older adults is well studied. Despite this, there are some knowledge gaps that need to be addressed: 1) research studying injurious falls, as opposed to any falls; 2) knowledge on sex differences, and specific risk profiles for injurious falls; 3) development of an effective screening tool for community-dwelling older adults, that can detect people at risk of first-time falls, who may be targeted by preventive interventions; and 4) what factors influence the risk of losing independence, in a long-term perspective, after an injurious fall. 5. Epidemiological studies of Helicobacter pylori and its relation to cancer and precancerous lesions in the upper gastrointestinal tract
Sammanfattning : Helicobacter pylori infection is strongly associated with gastric cancer risk. The carcinogenic process is supposed to occur step by step, from a normal gastric epithelium via gastritis, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia to dysplasia. LÄS MER
