1. Re-Membering Beirut : Performing Memory and Community Across a 'Postwar' City
Sammanfattning : More than 20 years after the end of Lebanon’s civil war (1975-1990), reconciliation remains elusive. A number of factors contribute to this stasis. LÄS MER
2. Pagan Pasts, Christian Futures: Memory Manipulation and Christianisation in the Cities of Western Asia Minor
Sammanfattning : Religion has always impacted how we structure the physical world around us, and the Roman world was no exception. Roman cities were constructed and shaped around religious life and religious practices. Religious art was omnipresent, and religious architecture monumental. LÄS MER
3. Active Memory Processing on Multiple Time-scales in Simulated Cortical Networks with Hebbian Plasticity
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines declarative memory function, and its underlying neural activity and mechanisms in simulated cortical networks. The included simulation models utilize and synthesize proposed universal computational principles of the brain, such as the modularity of cortical circuit organization, attractor network theory, and Hebbian synaptic plasticity, along with selected biophysical detail from the involved brain areas to implement functional models of known cortical memory systems. 4. Accelerating Distributed Storage in Heterogeneous Settings
Sammanfattning : Heterogeneity in cloud environments is a fact of life—from workload skews and network path changes, to the diversity of server hardware components, these are all factors that impact the performance of distributed storage. In this dissertation, we identify that heterogeneity can in fact be one of the primary causes of service degradation for storage systems. LÄS MER
5. The effect of enriched environment on gene expression and stroke recovery
Sammanfattning : Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the major course of long-term disabilities in industrialized countries. Most surviving stroke patients show some degree of spontaneous recovery, but persistent symptoms in sensorimotor and cognitive functions are common. LÄS MER
