  1. 1. Biosensor-based Methods for Detection of Microcystins as Early Warning Systems

    Författare :Lesedi Lebogang; Bioteknik; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Microcystins; Drinking water; Adda-specific monoclonal antibodies; Biosensors; Capacitive; Amperometric; Flow-ELISA; Microcontact imprinting;

    Sammanfattning : Cyanobacteria blooms are a water menace since they produce potent toxins that have been implicated in poisonings and deaths of humans and animals after consumption or contact with cyanotoxin-contaminated water. Of particular concern are cyanotoxins called microcystins, which are hepatotoxic cyclic peptides known to promote development of liver tumors in humans and animals. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Hierarchical responses to organic contaminants in aquatic ecotoxicological bioassays: from microcystins to biodegradation

    Författare :Katia Montenegro; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; grazing efficiency; potential trade-off; glyphosate mineralization; DDE; potential denitrification; microcystin production; potential nitrification; DDE biodegradation; water stable isotopes; groundwater apparent age; fenthion; Chlorophyta; Daphnia pulex; diversity productivity relationship; glyphosate;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis I explore the ecotoxicological responses of aquatic organisms at different hierarchical levels to organic contaminants by means of bioassays. The bioassays use novel endpoints or approaches to elucidate the effects of exposure to contaminants and attempt to give mechanistic explanations that could be used to interpret effects at higher hierarchical scales. 3. 3. Plankton communities in a changing world - responses to temperature, brownification and lake restoration

    Författare :Mattias Ekvall; Enhet akvatisk ekologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Climate change; temperature; warming; brownification; biomanipulation; zooplankton; cyanobacteria; microcystin; grazing; Daphnia;

    Sammanfattning : The effects of increasing temperatures, in light of climate change, have been a well-studied topic during the past decades. However, aquatic ecosystems are also faced with additional challenges such as increasing water colour, known as “brownification”. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Managing Eutrophic Waters in Artificial Recharge Plants : Cyanotoxin risk in Swedish freshwaters

    Författare :Jing Li; Avdelningen för Teknisk vattenresurslära; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Drinking water; cyanobacterial blooms; cyanotoxins; nutrients; total phosphorus; DIN TP; quick test kit;

    Sammanfattning : In the last decades, the frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial blooms have been of increasing concern. They have become a direct threat to the drinking water supply by clogging filters, bringing odour and unpleasant taste to the treated water and worst of all, causing elevated cyanotoxins, which can be difficult to remove, yet lead to severe health issues. 5. 5. The Cyanophyte Arthrospira Fusiformis in African Waters - Eco-Physiology and Potential Use in Tropical Aquaculture

    Författare :Aidate Mussagy; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; limnology; Marinbiologi; marine biology; aquatic ecology; lipopolysaccharide endotoxins LPS ; salinity; osmoregulation; proline; aquaculture feeds; Artemia.; Hydrobiology; anatoxin; microcystin; ITS sequences; phenotype analysis; taxonomy; Cyanophyceae; Arthrospira fusiformis; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The cyanoprokaryote (blue-green algae) genus Arthrospira occurs in saline, alkaline tropical waters of Africa, Asia, and Central America. Traditionally Arthrospira has been used as a food supplement by the Kanembu tribe of Lake Chad and Aztecs living in the valley of Mexico City. LÄS MER
