6. Assessing carotid plaque structure
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death and disability in the western world. Its clinical complications include acute myocardial infarction, sudden death and stroke. Thirty to 40 % of all ischemic strokes are caused by a carotid stenosis. LÄS MER
7. The role of oxidized LDL and inflammation in the metabolic syndrome, diabetes and atherosclerosis

8. Carotid Vessel Wall Thickness and Echogenicity : In the ULSAM study
Sammanfattning : In this thesis the common carotid artery intima media thickness in nearly 500 elderly men is independently associated with insulin sensitivity, measured by the gold standard hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp test (paper 1), to both COX- and cytokine mediated inflammation independently of other markers of inflammation, oxidative stress and antioxidant status (paper 2) and also to the alleles of the apolipoprotein gene independently of lipid levels and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 3). The echogenicity of the carotid intima-media complex measured as grey scale median predicts mortality independently of common carotid artery intima-media thickness, prior cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular risk factors (paper 4). 9. Patterns of non-invasive imaging of carotid atherosclerosis
Sammanfattning : Atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease that can be generalized, affecting more than one arterial bed simultaneously, or localized, manifested in one system. Ultrasound based measurements of plaque textural features, such as low grey scale median (GSM), echolucent (hypoechoic) plaque types and juxtaluminal black (hypoechoic) area (JBA) are manifestation of potentially unstable lesions. 10. Ultrasound Image Analysis for Automated Classification of Atherosclerotic Plaque in the Human Carotid Artery
Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases, caused by atherosclerosis, is one of the most common causes of death in the industrialized world. Two risk factors, that both can be assessed with ultrasound, are the Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) in the arterial wall and the composition of the atherosclerotic plaque. LÄS MER
