  1. 1. Studies on arterial endothelial function and intima-media thickness using ultrasound technique

    Författare :Morteza Rohani; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Ultrasound; atherosclerosis; flow mediated dilatation; endothelial function; carotid arteries; thoracic aorta; brachial artery; coronary artery disease; nicotine; snuff; prednisolone; rheumatoid arthritis;

    Sammanfattning : Background: The development of ultrasonographic arterial imaging, high-resolution B-mode ultrasonography, has created a technical basis for a new diagnostic approach to atherosclerotic disease by offering the possibility of accurate and reproducible quantification of the structural and functional changes in the arterial wall. Flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of the brachial artery and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) have been shown to be good surrogate markers of atherosclerosis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Cardiovascular structure and function in obesity. The impact of body composition, sleep apnea and sustained weight loss

    Författare :Dimitris Kardassis; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; weight loss; cardiac function; cardiac structure; inflammation; intima-media thickness; obstructive sleep apnoea;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Obesity is associated with disturbances in cardiovascular structure and function varying along with the degree of fatness, but the mechanisms underlying this co-variation are unclear. Short-term weight loss appears to have favourable effects on the cardiovascular system, but whether such improvements are maintained in the long run is unknown. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Influence of Herring (Clupea harengus) Intake on Risk Factors for Cardiovascular Disease

    Författare :Helen Lindqvist; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Herring; cardiovascular disease; metabolic syndrome; overweight; intima media thickness; lipoproteins; n-3 fatty acids; antioxidants; fish;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes four studies that investigated whether or not herring (Clupea harengus) intake decreases cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. It has previously been shown that fatty fish and fish oil intake decreases the risk of atherosclerosis and CVD. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Ultrasound Image Analysis for Automated Classification of Atherosclerotic Plaque in the Human Carotid Artery

    Författare :Peter Holdfeldt; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; classification; dynamic programming; carotid artery; Java program; image segmentation; ultrasound images; intima-media thickness; atherosclerotic plaque;

    Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases, caused by atherosclerosis, is one of the most common causes of death in the industrialized world. Two risk factors, that both can be assessed with ultrasound, are the Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) in the arterial wall and the composition of the atherosclerotic plaque. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Ultrasound and atherosclerosis. Evaluation of methods, risk factors and intervention

    Författare :Jerker Persson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Clinical physics; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; validation; ultrasound; reproducibility; progression; plaque; intima-media thickness; intervention; atherosclerosis; epidemiology; cardiovascular risk factors; radiology; tomography; medical instrumentation; Klinisk fysiologi; radiologi; tomografi; medicinsk instrumentering;

    Sammanfattning : The importance of studying cardiovascular disease before the process leads to hard end-points has been recognised, and methods to quantify early atherosclerosis have been taken in use in many research centres around the world. An ultrasound method with a computer assisted image analysing system was developed in co-operation with the Wallenberg Laboratory for Cardiovascular Research and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden.
