1. Exploring the Ciprofloxacin Resistome
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents an exploration of the resistance evolution in Escherichia coli towards the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. High level ciprofloxacin resistance is typically acquired by an accumulation of mutations and plasmid borne genes reducing drug target binding, increasing drug efflux, and modifying the drug. LÄS MER
2. Constraints on up-regulation of drug efflux in the evolution of ciprofloxacin resistance
Sammanfattning : The crucial role of antibiotics in modern medicine, in curing infections and enabling advanced medical procedures, is being threatened by the increasing frequency of resistant bacteria. Better understanding of the forces selecting resistance mutations could help develop strategies to optimize the use of antibiotics and slow the spread of resistance. LÄS MER
3. Hazard assessment of ciprofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole and triclosan for marine periphyton : Ecotoxicology, Pollution Induced Community Tolerance and Co-Tolerance
Sammanfattning : Antibiotics and personal care products are used in large quantities and commonly detected in various environmental compartments. The two antibiotics, ciprofloxacin and sulfamethoxazole, and the personal care product triclosan are among the most commonly detected compounds in sewage treatment plants and aquatic environments. 4. Experimental modulation and suppression of anti-allograft immune response
Sammanfattning : Abstract The objective of this investigation was to characterise the immunomodulatory or immunosuppressive effects of single drug treatment and the potential synergistic or additive effects of combined treatment with the focus on ciprofloxacin, thalidomide, mycophenolate mofetil, azathioprine, cyclophosphamide or leflunomide added to cyclosporin A (CyA). A rat cardiac transplant model was used to study graft survival and the influence on lymphocytes was evaluated by in vitro tests. LÄS MER
5. Evolution of Antibiotic Resistance
Sammanfattning : The emergence of antimicrobial resistance is a major global threat to modern medicine. The rapid dissemination of resistant pathogens and the associated loss of efficacy of many important drugs needs to be met with the development of new antibiotics and alternative treatment options.
