2. Regulation of the germinal center response by T follicular helper cells and type I interferons
Sammanfattning : The protective effect of most currently available vaccines is dependent on high-affinity antibodies and long lived B cell memory, which develop within organized structures of secondary lymphoid organs called germinal centers (GCs). GC formation is supported by T follicular helper (Tfh) cells, a subset of CD4+ T cells that develop in parallel to other effector T cells and specifically localizes to B cell follicles. LÄS MER
3. Intestinal dendritic cell migration and induction of T cell responses
Sammanfattning : The intestine represents the body’s largest surface exposed to the outer world and is thus a major entry site for pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. The intestinal immune system has the important task of protecting us against infection while maintaining tolerance against the vast amount of commensal microbes populating the intestinal tract and the multitude of foreign antigen present in the diet. 4. Regulatory properties of dendritic cells and B cells in adaptive immunity
Sammanfattning : This thesis is based upon four original papers in which human dendritic cells (DCs) and B cells have been analyzed in terms of how they influence the character of adaptive immune responses. DCs isolated from human tonsils were found to possess a capacity to directly regulate proliferation, isotype switching, and antibody production in B cells. LÄS MER
5. Costs in the ecology and evolution of the vertebrate immune system
Sammanfattning : A central assumption of theories of the ecology and evolution of immunological defence is that defence has not only benefits (in the form of resistance against parasites), but also costs. The aim of my studies was to investigate the nature and magnitude of costs of the vertebrate immune system, and to examine some of the consequences of these costs. LÄS MER
