11. Trophic complexity of zooplankton–cyanobacteria interactions in the Baltic Sea : Insights from molecular diet analysis
Sammanfattning : Blooms of nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria (NFC) occur in many freshwater and marine systems, including the Baltic Sea. By fixing dissolved nitrogen, they circumvent general summer nitrogen limitation, while also generating a supply of novel bioavailable nitrogen for non-diazotrophic primary producers and ultimately supporting secondary production. 12. Molecular evidence for metazooplankton feeding on filamentous cyanobacteria and picocyanobacteria in the Baltic Sea
Sammanfattning : Interactions between zooplankton and cyanobacteria are complex and system-specific. They play an important role in mediating responses of phytoplankton to changes in nutrient regime and top-down manipulations. LÄS MER
13. Diazotrophy and diversity of benthic cyanobacteria in tropical coastal zones
Sammanfattning : Discoveries in recent years have disclosed the importance of marine cyano-bacteria in the context of primary production and global nitrogen cycling. It is hypothesized here that microbial mats in tropical coastal habitats harbour a rich diversity of previously uncharacterized cyanobacteria and that benthic marine nitrogen fixation in coastal zones is substantial. 14. Genetic variability and nitrogenase activity of cyanobacterial communities associated with tropical seagrass meadows (western Indian Ocean)
Sammanfattning : Tropical seagrass ecosystems are highly productive and important for sustaining marine life and associated coastal societies. In this study, the diversity and role of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria associated with five common seagrass genera in coastal regions of the western Indian Ocean (WIO; Tanzania) were examined, as well as the impact of anthropogenic activities. 15. External Growth Control of Baltic Sea Cyanobacteria
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of the study was to provide better insights to the ecological role and impact of cyanobacteria in Baltic Sea (BS) bay, coastal and open sea areas. Biomass and heterocyst development of diazotrophic, heterocystous cyanobacteria were monitored over several years simultaneously as physical parameters such as nutrients and temperature. LÄS MER
