  1. 1. Digestion and Absorption of Sphingomyelin from Milk

    Författare :Lena Nyberg; Lund Medicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastro-enterology; intestine; sphingolipid; ceramidase; sphingomyelinase; ceramide; Gastroenterologi;

    Sammanfattning : Sphingomyelin (SM) is a major component of mammalian cell membranes. Due to its widespread occurrence it is a dietary component, occurring mainly in milk, eggs, meat and fish. In the cell membrane SM was earlier considered to be only a structural element, which interacts with cholesterol and forms a system for bilayer stabilization. LÄS MER

  2. 2. On the role of bioactive sphingolipids and their metabolizing enzymes in cancer

    Författare :Dilruba Ahmed; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Ceramide is a family of closely related molecules, which are presumed to be in the center of sphingolipid metabolism. Among sphingolipid metabolites, several ceramide subspecies and sphingosine induce apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and death, whereas sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) mediates cell proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis and metastasis. 3. 3. Experimental Studies of Ursolic Acid and Alkaline Sphingomyelinase in Colon Cancer and Colitis

    Författare :David Andersson; Lund Medicin; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : Sphingomyelin (SM) is a sphingolipid present in all eukaryotic cell membranes. Hydrolysis of SM by sphingomyelinase (SMase) generates ceramide, which has effects on cell-cycle regulation and apoptosis. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Palmitate-induced Apoptosis in Insulin-producing β-cells

    Författare :Kristofer Thörn; Peter Bergsten; Claes Wollheim; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; ER stress; apoptosis; palmitate; sphingosine-1-phosphate; ceramide; beta-cell; fatty acid; Medical cell biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology; Medicinsk cellbiologi;

    Sammanfattning : Type 2 diabetes is a disease characterized by the inability of pancreatic β-cells to secrete sufficient amounts of insulin to maintain normoglycemia. Increased levels of saturated fatty acids such as palmitate are believed to contribute to β-cell failure and the development of the disease. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Towards membrane engineering as a tool in cell factory design: A case study on acetic acid tolerance in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Författare :Lina Lindahl; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; butanol; inhibitors; lipidomics; Key words: Lignocellulose; Zygosaccharomyces bailii; molecular dynamics simulations; membrane permeability; carbon-14 uptake; ethanol; robustness;

    Sammanfattning : The sustainable production of fuels, chemicals, and materials using renewable resources is a necessity if we are to reduce our ecological footprint and the rate of climate change. Lignocellulosic biomass, the major constituent of plant cell walls, is a renewable raw material with great potential due to its high abundance. LÄS MER
