11. GH Secretion in children. Methodological aspects of determining immunoreactive and bioactive isoforms
Sammanfattning : A child's hormone-dependent growth is dependent on multiple factors, although linear growth is closely associated with levels of growth hormone (GH) secretion. As GH in serum exists in several isoforms, some of which may not be identified by immunoassay, possible alterations in the secretion of these different isoforms in childhood may influence growth and/or metabolism. 12. Placental Function : An Epidemiological and Magnetic Resonance Study
Sammanfattning : Placental function is central for normal pregnancy and in many of the major pregnancy disorders. We used magnetic resonance imaging techniques to investigate placental function in normal pregnancy, in early and late preeclampsia and in intrauterine growth restriction. LÄS MER
13. Regulation of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 (IGFBP-1) and implications in catabolic conditions
Sammanfattning : This thesis has studied the regulation of IGFBP-1 (insulin-like growth factor binding protein 1), which is one factor regulating the bioavailability of IGF-I with special interest how IGFBP-1 is regulated in vitro and in humans, especially in diabetes and catabolic conditions. The IGFBP-1 cDNA was cloned and used for studies in human hepatoma cells, HepG2, which showed that both insulin and IGF-I could decrease IGFBP-1 in the cell conditioned medium. LÄS MER
14. Metabolic effects and long-term safety of childhood growth hormone treatment
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the metabolic effects and long-term safety of childhood growth hormone (GH) treatment. In order to achieve this aim, the different projects consist of a two-part clinical trial on metabolic features linked to GH physiology and GH treatment as well as two large population-based cohort studies with focus on the long-term cardiovascular and cancer risks in previously GH-treated patients. 15. Prader-Willi syndrome : diagnosis and effects of growth hormone treatment
Sammanfattning : Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) is a rare neurogenetic disorder characterised by hypotonia (especially pronounced in the perinatal period) with "failure to thrive", hypogonadism, hypoventilation, dysmorphic features, final short stature and mental retardation. From the age of 2 years hyperphagia develops leading to obesity if the caloric intake is not limited. LÄS MER
