1. Markov Chains, Renewal, Branching and Coalescent Processes : Four Topics in Probability Theory
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers. In paper 1, we prove central limit theorems for Markov chains under (local) contraction conditions. As a corollary we obtain a central limit theorem for Markov chains associated with iterated function systems with contractive maps and place-dependent Dini-continuous probabilities. LÄS MER
2. Improved computerized perimetric threshold strategies
Sammanfattning : Perimetric threshold examination is the most important method for diagnosing and monitoring patients with glaucoma. Such examination, however, is time-consuming and often difficult for the elderly patients in whom glaucoma is prevalent. Shorter test strategies have been proposed, but unfortunately also with lower test quality. LÄS MER
3. Free convolutions and the Pearcey process in random matrix theory
Sammanfattning : The dissertation is in Random Matrix Theory, a field at the interface of probability theory, mathematical physics and operator algebras. First, we examine elementary questions that arise in Voiculescu’s Free Probability Theory of non-commutative random variables. LÄS MER
4. Reconstruction of Past European Land Cover Based on Fossil Pollen Data : Gaussian Markov Random Field Models for Compositional Data
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to develop statistical models to reconstruct past land cover composition and human land use based on fossil pollen records over Europe for different time periods over the past 6000 years. Accurate maps of past land cover and human land use are needed when studying the interaction between climate and land surface, and the effects of human land use on past climate. LÄS MER
5. On two-dimensional conformal geometry related to the Schramm-Loewner evolution
Sammanfattning : This thesis contains three papers, one introductory chapter and one chapter with overviews of the papers and some additional results. The topic of this thesis is the geometry of models related to the Schramm-Loewner evolution. In Paper I, we derive a multifractal boundary spectrum for SLEκ(ρ) processes with κ.. LÄS MER
