  1. 41. Null Ellipsometry and Protein Adsorption to Model Biomaterials

    Författare :Johan Benesch; Thomas Arnebrant; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Sammanfattning : When implants are inserted into the human body cascades of events become started that will determine the outcome of wound healing and ultimately the success of the implantation. The events start with the adsorption of small molecules, and proteins that may be activated (enzymes) or are able to activate cells of the immune defense and the healing process. LÄS MER

  2. 42. Antibodies as pathogenic factors and biomarkers in rheumatoid arthritis

    Författare :Erik Lönnblom; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Ever since the evolution of an adaptive immune system capable of creating immune receptors that may recognize self-antigens, we have been at risk of autoimmunity. There are over 100 different types of autoimmune diseases targeting almost every available tissue from head to toe, with joints and connective tissues being a common target. LÄS MER

  3. 43. Islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) : Mechanisms of Amyloidogenesis in the Pancreatic Islets and Potential Roles in Diabetes Mellitus

    Författare :Zhi Ma; Arne Andersson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Islet amyloid is the most common characteristic feature of the islets in type 2 diabetes, being found in up to 90% of diabetic patients at post-mortem. lt has as its unique component the islet beta-cell peptide islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP), which is eo-secreted with insulin. 4. 44. Adenocarcinoma of the cervix uteri : methods to improve diagnostics : biological markers and HPV testing

    Författare :Susanne Friederike Müller; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Cervical adenocarcinoma (ADC) represents about 20% of invasive cervical cancers. Implementation of screening programs that have led to a decrease in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) has only had a limited preventive effect on adenocarcinoma as the incidence of ADC, especially among younger women, has steadily increased in recent decades. 5. 45. Physiological and clinical studies of calcium-regulating hormones calcitonin and parathyroid hormone-related protein

    Författare :Haiqin Rong; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :bone metabolism; breast cancer; calcitonin; calcium; exercise; lanthanide; milk; neonate; osteoporosis; parathyroid hormone-related protein; parturition; polymerase chain reaction; time-resolved fluorometry;

    Sammanfattning : The present studies were performed to elucidate several physiological and clinical questions of calcitonin (CT) and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) such as: a) Does age influence the basal and calcium-stimulated levels and circulating molecular forms of CT in healthy females? b) Are osteoporotic patients lacking circulating monomeric CT? c) How is salmon CT (sCT) absorbed and cleared during treatment of diseases? d) Is there any effect of acute physical activity on circulating CT, PTH, PTHrP and bone metabolic markers? e) Is there an absorbance of PTHrP in milk by the neonate? and f) Are there any interactions between CT and PTHrP? In addition, by use of time-resolved dissociation and enhancement lanthanide fluorometry, the effort was put to develop two-site immunofluorometric assays (IFMA) for sCT and PTHrP as well as a quantitative competitive PCR (QC-PCR) for measuring PTHrP mRNA and use these methods in some of the investigations. Heterogeneity of CT forms in serum was disclosed after immunoextraction, fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) and radioimmunoassay (RIA) in healthy females and osteoporotic patients. LÄS MER
