21. Physiological trade-offs in reproduction and condition dependence of a secondary sexual trait
Sammanfattning : This thesis examines parental condition, how it is traded off against reproduction and how it is displayed in a secondary sexual trait. The studies were performed on nest-box breeding collared flycatchers Ficedula albicollis on the island of Gotland, in the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER
22. Short-term adaptation of S. cerevisiae to lignocellulosic inhibitors: Underlying metabolic and physiological changes
Sammanfattning : The limited tolerance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae (budding yeast) to inhibitors present in lignocellulosic hydrolysates is a major challenge in second-generation bioethanol production. Short-term adaptation of the yeast to lignocellulosic hydrolysates during cell propagation has been shown to improve its tolerance, and thus its performance in lignocellulose fermentation. LÄS MER
23. Nitric oxide in exhaled gas : studies on physiological regulation and measurements in infants and children
Sammanfattning : Nitric oxide (NO) is found in the exhaled gas of humans, starting from birth, and is increased in adult patients with bronchial asthma. This study assessed whether the measurement of NO in exhaled gas is technically feasible in infants and children. LÄS MER
24. Improvements, Validation and Adaptation of a Shoulder Model
Sammanfattning : A series of biomechanical investigations aimed at contributing to the understanding of shoulder function and improvements of a computer based shoulder model is presented. In the thesis the structure of shoulder models is revised. LÄS MER
25. Fermentation Inhibitors in the Production of Bio-ethanol: Detoxification of Lignocellulose Hydrolyzates and Physiological Effects of Furfural on Yeast
Sammanfattning : Different strategies to overcome inhibitor problems in the production of bio-ethanol from lignocellulose hydrolyzates with the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae were examined. The strategies included detoxification prior to fermentation and in situ detoxification of furfural. A strain development for improved inhibitor tolerance was also initiated. LÄS MER
