  1. 1. Resistance to phagocytosis in Streptococcus pyogenes

    Författare :Fredric Carlsson; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infektioner; Infections; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Medicin människa och djur ; phagocytosis; innate immunity; complement; Streptococcus pyogenes; M protein;

    Sammanfattning : Phagocytosis of Streptococcus pyogenes is complement dependent. However, the cell wall-associated M protein, which exists in >100 different serotypes (M types), enables the bacteria to evade phagocytosis. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Mechanisms of phagocytosis resistance in Streptococcus pyogenes

    Författare :Heike Kotarsky; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi; fibrinogen; FHL-1; Factor H; M protein; Streptococcus pyogenes; phagocytosis;

    Sammanfattning : A distinguishing feature of Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS) is their ability to resist phagocytosis in whole human blood in the absence of type-specific antibodies, a property that is dependent on the expression of the surface associated M proteins. A common characteristic of M proteins is their interaction with a variety of host proteins including the complement regulatory protein factor H (FH) and fibrinogen that plays a key role in coagulation. 3. 3. Glucose and insulin modulate phagocytosis and production of reactive oxygen metabolites in human neutrophil granulocytes

    Författare :Daniel Saiepour; Per-Arne Oldenborg; Janove Sehlin; Olle Stendahl; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neutrophil granulocytes; glucose; insulin; protein kinase C; diacylglycerol; phagocytosis; respiratory burst; diabetes; Histology; Histologi;

    Sammanfattning : Neutrophil granulocytes play an important role in the host defence against invading microorganisms and constitute the frontline of defence within the innate immune system and are among the first cells to arrive at the site of inflammation. Effective phagocytosis and killing of invading pathogens by neutrophils is of significant importance for successful resistance to infectious diseases. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Interactions of human C4BP with Bordetella pertussis and Streptococcus pyogenes

    Författare :Karin Berggård; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; M protein; antigenic variation; phagocytosis resistance; complement; C4b-binding protein C4BP ; Bordetella pertussis; Streptococcus pyogenes; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Mikrobiologi; bakteriologi; virologi; mykologi;

    Sammanfattning : Many microorganisms have developed mechanisms to protect themselves against attack from the complement system of the host. One possible mechanism for a microorganism to evade complement attack is to bind a human complement regulator, which may allow the microorganism to down-regulate complement activation. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Interactions between streptococcal M proteins and human plasma proteins

    Författare :Charlotta Sandin; Avdelningen för medicinsk mikrobiologi; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Infektioner; Infections; innate immunity; Streptococcus pyogenes; phagocytosis resistance;

    Sammanfattning : Streptococcus pyogenes is a common human pathogen, which causes a variety of diseases. A major virulence factor of S. pyogenes is the surface-associated M protein, which mediates resistance to phagocytosis. Several studies indicate that M proteins inhibit complement deposition and thereby phagocytosis. LÄS MER
